NFL Survivor Pool Picks & Planner

One wrong pick and you're done. No mulligans, no waiting for next week. This is the framework we run ourselves every season to stay alive deep into December — plus this week's call and a planner so you don't spend a great team on an average week.

Reminder: survivor picks are straight-up winners only. No spreads, no odds — just pick the team that wins the game.

Darnold went down on the opening drive and Seattle still found a way. Drew Lock led two late scoring drives and the defense picked off Drake Maye three times in the fourth to close it out.

Week 1 Survivor Call — Sunday Update
Updated September 13, 2026
Seattle SeahawksCashed

Our original Week 1 call. Seattle closed it out — we're alive and on to the Sunday board. If you rode with us, you're still standing.

Los Angeles Chargersvs ArizonaThe Pick

The popular pick and it's popular for a reason. Arizona's got a first-year head coach in Mike LaFleur and a banged-up backfield question mark in Jeremiyah Love. The Chargers are as buttoned up as it gets under Harbaugh — Herbert has his weapons back, Alt and Slater are healthy, and the defense was top five last year. Biggest favourite on the board and the team most likely to actually play like it. Week 1 isn't the week to get cute. It's the week to survive.

Alternates

  • Jacksonville Jaguarsvs Cleveland

The smart alternative if you don't want to burn the Chargers. Lawrence in year two with Liam Coen finally looks the part, against a Cleveland team starting Watson in his first game back since 2024 under a brand-new first-time head coach, with Myles Garrett gone. Some models actually have Jacksonville's win probability edging out the Chargers this week.

  • Detroit Lionsvs New Orleans

Another clean one. A legitimate team walking into a rebuilding Saints roster. Low variance, high floor.

  • Las Vegas Raidersvs Miami

The contrarian play for big pools. Both teams rebuilding, but Vegas has a clearer plan — Klint Kubiak, Cousins under center, Linderbaum anchoring the middle, Bowers and Crosby as real playmakers. Miami claimed seven players off waivers during final cuts; that tells you where that roster is. Win probability sits 60-71% depending on the model and almost nobody's using them.

  • Pittsburgh Steelersvs Atlanta

Some models have this as Pittsburgh's easiest game of the entire season. Rodgers' farewell tour flying under the radar compared to the bigger favourites. Low ownership, real win probability — exactly the combination you want when you're trying to create separation.

Save / Avoid

  • Save: Los Angeles Rams

The better team and a Super Bowl favourite, but skip them in Australia — their home opener against the Giants in Week 2 is the same result with way less risk.

  • Save: Dallas Cowboys

Favoured by 2-3 at the Giants on Sunday night, but a division rival on the road in primetime is precisely the recipe for a Week 1 upset. Save Dallas for a spot where the moment isn't working against them.

  • Avoid: Cowboys at Giants (SNF)

Division rival, on the road, in primetime. Sloppy, emotional, full of upsets nobody saw coming. Not touching it either direction.

  • Avoid: Rams at 49ers (Australia)

Division rival, short week, other side of the planet. Three of our automatic fade signals stacked in one game.

  • Avoid: Broncos at Chiefs (MNF)

Denver's actually favoured on the road at Arrowhead on a short week against a Chiefs team getting Mahomes back from a torn ACL. There's a version where the home crowd and the storyline carry KC to a win nobody had on the card. Skip it either direction.

  • Avoid: Titans at Jets

Two bad teams from last year, both with new coaches, new quarterbacks, and retooled rosters. Too many unknowns stacked on top of each other — we don't touch a game where we can't tell you what either team actually is yet.

What Is an NFL Survivor Pool

Simple concept, brutal execution. Every week you pick one NFL team to win. Pick right, you live to see next week. Pick wrong — or your team ties, depending on your pool's rules — and you're out. The catch that trips people up: you can only use each team once all season. That Chiefs pick you're saving for a sure thing in Week 14? You can't also use them in Week 3 because the matchup looked juicy.

Most pools run 100-200 entries and wrap up well before the playoffs. The bigger the pool (500+), the longer it drags, sometimes all the way to Week 18. When a few survivors are still standing at the end the pot usually gets split, unless your pool has tiebreaker rules. Always read your pool's rules before Week 1 — rebuy pools, two-team-pick weeks, ties counting as losses, all of that changes strategy completely.

Our Framework for Making the Right Pick Every Week

  1. 1

Start with the week's biggest favourites, but don't stop there

A team expected to win by a touchdown or more generally wins around 65% of the time. That's your candidate pool for the week, not your final answer. Remember: survivor is about the outright win — spreads don't matter.

  2. 2

    Layer in offensive form

A good win probability paired with an offence that's actually humming is a different bet than one riding a shaky unit that could no-show. Recent scoring trends beat season-long stats.

  3. 3

Attack the weak teams, not just the good ones

The safest picks come from stacking a competent offence against a genuinely bad defence. Point differential and separate pass/run defensive splits tell you more than record does.

  4. 4

    Cross-reference with the schedule ahead

Check the planner below before locking anything in. Burning your best team in Week 4 when they had three softer matchups queued up for Weeks 12-15 is how good players run out of gas late.

Our Core Survivor Strategy Rules

Map out 4-5 weeks in advance, minimum

Don't pick week to week in isolation. If your best team this week also has cupcake matchups the next month, that's a signal to hold, not spend.

Resist the urge to always take the best pick

The single strongest matchup on the board isn't automatically the right pick for your pool position. Use your elite teams early and you'll be stuck with mediocre options when the games matter most.

Do the math on team supply

18 weeks, 32 teams. A deep run uses just over half the league. Budget accordingly — don't burn your top tier in the first six weeks.

Fade the chalk when you can afford to

The team everyone in your pool is on is exactly the team whose upset wipes out half the field. A solid second-best option that differentiates you is often worth more than the extra 3% win probability.

Save your elite teams, especially in rebuy pools

If your pool allows a buy-back after an early loss, the whole risk calculus changes. Get aggressive early and save your true locks for the stretch run.

Track injuries religiously

A star quarterback or key offensive lineman out changes a matchup completely. Re-check the injury report before every lock.

Watch for bounce-back signals post-bye

A team that looked lost in October but is coming off a bye with better health and a cleaner plan is worth a second look, even if the box score from three weeks ago says otherwise.

Home field as your tiebreaker

When two options look statistically similar, lean home. Not dominant on its own, but a legitimate thumb on the scale.

Stay away from short-week road trips

A team travelling for a Thursday game right after a hard-fought Sunday is walking into a bad spot physically. Automatic fade regardless of how big a favourite they are.

Avoid divisional road games

Division opponents know each other too well, and the extra motivation plus familiarity produces more chaos than the market suggests. One of the more reliable avoid signals.

Be careful with new starting quarterbacks

Rookie first starts and backups stepping in mean defences haven't built a book on that guy yet. That unpredictability cuts both ways, and you don't want to be holding the bag.

Know your pool's exact rules before Week 1

Playoff extension, rebuy windows, two-team weeks, tie handling — confirm all of it in writing before you make a single pick.
